Terms of service
Last updated 10 October 2026
crusades.io is a free browser strategy game, operated from Perth, Western Australia. These terms are the agreement between you and us for using the website and the game ("the service"). By playing, you agree to them. If you do not agree, please do not use the service.
The short version
- The game is free to play and you do not need an account.
- Play fairly and treat other players decently.
- Anything you buy is cosmetic. Crowns and items have no cash value and cannot be cashed out or traded.
- We do our best to keep the game running, but we cannot promise it always will.
- Nothing here takes away rights that consumer law gives you.
1. Who can play
You must be at least 13 years old to use the service. If you are under 18, you need the permission of a parent or guardian to make an account or to buy anything, and they agree to these terms on your behalf.
2. Accounts
- Accounts are optional. You sign in with Discord, Google or Steam, or with a link sent to your email address; keep that account or mailbox secure, because whoever controls it controls your account here.
- You are responsible for what is done with your account. Tell us if you think someone else has used it.
- One person may hold an account; accounts may not be sold, traded or given away.
- You can ask us to delete your account at any time (see the privacy policy). Deleting it removes your Crowns, items and reserved name for good.
3. House names
- The name you play under must not be hateful, harassing, sexually explicit, or an attempt to pass yourself off as someone else, including us.
- A reserved house name is yours to play under for as long as your account exists and these terms are kept. It is not property and cannot be transferred or sold.
- We may change or release a name that breaks these rules. If the name was paid for and the fault was ours, we will return the Crowns.
4. Fair play
You agree not to:
- cheat, or use a modified version of the game, a script or a bot to gain an advantage in a public or shared game;
- disrupt games or the servers, for example by flooding them, attacking them, or deliberately causing games to break;
- harass, threaten or abuse other players;
- try to get into accounts, systems or data that are not yours;
- use the service to break the law.
Teaming up, betrayal, broken pacts and ganging up on the leader are part of the game and are not against these terms.
5. Crowns and items
The store sells Crowns, the game's currency, which can be spent on cosmetic items, bundles and a reserved house name.
- Cosmetic only. Nothing sold in the store makes you stronger in a game.
- A licence, not ownership. When you buy Crowns or an item you receive a personal, non-transferable right to use it in the game for as long as the service is offered. You do not own it.
- No cash value. Crowns and items cannot be exchanged for money, sold, traded, or moved to another account.
- Prices and the catalogue may change. We may add, alter or withdraw items and change what they cost in Crowns. An item you already own stays yours to use, though how it looks may be revised.
- Spending Crowns is final. You are asked to confirm before Crowns are spent.
6. Payments and refunds
- Payments are handled by Stripe, which may act as the seller of record and may apply its own terms to the payment. Prices are shown before you pay, and taxes are added where they apply.
- Crowns are delivered to your account as soon as payment is confirmed. By buying, you ask for that immediate delivery; where the law gives you a cooling-off period for digital purchases, you accept that it ends once the Crowns are delivered.
- Because Crowns are delivered at once, purchases are not refundable for a change of mind.
- If something goes wrong, for example you were charged and received nothing, or charged twice, write to us and we will put it right or refund you.
- If a payment is refunded or reversed, the Crowns it bought are taken back. If they have already been spent, your balance may go below zero until it is made up.
- Your statutory rights are not affected. In Australia our services come with guarantees under the Australian Consumer Law that cannot be excluded, and you are entitled to a refund or other remedy where it says so. The same goes for rights you have under the consumer law of your own country.
7. Advertising
The service shows advertising, including banners in a corner of the screen during a game. Buying anything from the store removes them. We do not control the content of advertisements and are not responsible for the goods or services they offer.
8. The game's software and content
- The game's software is free software, released under the GNU Affero General Public License version 3. Your rights to copy, study and change that software come from that licence, and nothing in these terms limits them. The source is linked from the front page.
- Its simulation is built on the OpenFront engine, © OpenFront and Contributors, and some map terrain is OpenFront map data under CC BY-SA 4.0.
- The name crusades.io, its logo, and the service we run (the servers, the accounts, the store) are ours. These terms, not the software licence, govern your use of the service.
9. Availability and changes
- We may change, pause or end any part of the service, including maps, rules and features, at any time. Games may be interrupted, and a game in progress cannot be restored if a server fails.
- If we ever close the service for good, we will give at least 30 days' notice on the front page where we reasonably can, so that Crowns can be spent.
10. Suspension
If you break these terms we may warn you, remove you from a game, release a house name, or suspend or close your account. For a serious or repeated breach we may do so without warning. Crowns and items on an account closed for a breach are not refunded, except where the law requires it. If you think we got it wrong, write to us and a person will look at it again.
11. What we do not promise
The service is provided as it is. To the extent the law allows, we do not promise that it will be uninterrupted, free of faults, or that any game, score or item will be preserved.
To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect or consequential loss, or for loss of data, profit or opportunity, arising from your use of the service; and our total liability to you is limited to the amount you paid us in the twelve months before the claim arose.
Nothing in these terms excludes or limits any guarantee, right or remedy that cannot lawfully be excluded or limited, including those under the Australian Consumer Law, or liability for fraud, or for death or personal injury caused by negligence.
12. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms. When we do, we will change the date at the top, and for a significant change we will say so on the front page. Continuing to play after a change means you accept the new terms. Changes do not apply to purchases already made.
13. Law and disputes
These terms are governed by the law of Western Australia, Australia. If you are a consumer, you also keep the protection of the mandatory laws of the country where you live, and may bring a claim in your local courts. Please write to us first; most problems can be sorted out without anyone going to court.
